Michelle Obama’s Mother Finds Washington to Her Liking - NYTimes.com

More top-notch reporting from the BHO Cheerleading section of the NYT.

An In-Law Is Finding Washington to Her Liking

But after three months in the Executive Mansion, Mrs. Robinson is unexpectedly and decidedly savoring her new life.

She entertains visitors from Chicago. She attends White House dinners and concerts hosted by her daughter, the first lady, Michelle Obama. She dines at local restaurants and delights in events at the Kennedy Center, where she often sits in the president’s box and chats with performers.

Yes, this can be found in the "Politics" section.

Jesus Missing From Obama's Georgetown Speech

Jesus Missing From Obama's Georgetown Speech | NBC Washington

Amidst all of the American flags and presidential seals, there was something missing when President Barack Obama gave an economic speech at Georgetown University this week -- Jesus.

The White House asked Georgetown to cover a monogram symbolizing Jesus' name in Gaston Hall, which Obama used for his speech, according to CNSNews.com.

The gold "IHS" monogram inscribed on a pediment in the hall was covered over by a piece of black-painted plywood, and remained covered over the next day, CNSNews.com reported.

I think if I were editor of that paper, I would have titled this article:

"Common Sense and Common Cents both missing from Economics Speech given at Local Church"

Today's Headlines:

EXCLUSIVE: Obama's $500,000 book bonanza
Deal reached 5 days before he took office

As he empathized with recession-weary Americans, President Obama arranged in the days just before he took office to secure a $500,000 advance for a children's book project, a disclosure report shows.

Analysts say there don't appear to be any rules that would bar such transactions after a president takes office, but it's unclear whether an incoming or sitting president has ever signed a book deal upon entering the White House.

The book deal came on top of nearly $2.5 million in book royalties paid to Mr. Obama last year for "Dreams From My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope," according to the Senate report, which was filed by Robert F. Bauer, who served general counsel to Mr. Obama's presidential campaign.

Yesterday's Headlines: (Cue shimmery fadeout effect and spooky going back in time music)

From a House Ethics investigation report, spurred on by Democrat anger over Newt Gingrich's book deal....from the congressional record. The speaker is Joe Moakley, liberal democrat from South Boston on Dec 22 1995.

Mr Moakley: The Ethics Committee made a very strong statement in their report. I want to take this time to read a section of the ethics committee report, and I quote:

"Existing rules permit a member to reap significant and immediate financial benefits appearing to be based primarily on his or her position."

Mr Moakley: At a minimum, this creates the impression of exploiting one’s office for personal gain. Such a perception is especially troubling when it pertains to the office of the Speaker of the House, a constitutional office requiring the highest standards of ethical behavior.

I guess the loophole today is that while the Office of the President is also a constitutional office, no one today is under the impression that it requires the highest standards of ethical behavior anymore.

WTH...?

MADRID (AP) — An Iranian woman living in Spain said Wednesday she welcomed a Tehran court ruling that awards her eye-for-an-eye justice against a suitor who blinded her with acid.

Ameneh Bahrami, 30, told Cadena SER radio, "I am not doing this out of revenge, but rather so that the suffering I went through is not repeated."

Late last year an Iranian court ruled that the man — identified only as Majid — who blinded Bahrami in 2004 after she spurned him, should also be blinded with acid based on the Islamic law system of "qisas," or eye-for-an-eye retribution, according to Iranian newspaper reports from November.

But Bahrami, who moved to Spain after the attack to get medical treatment, said Wednesday that under Iranian law, she is entitled to blind him in only one eye, unless she pays euro20,000 ($25,110), because in Iran women are not considered equal to men.

"They have told us that my two eyes are equal to one of his because in my country each man is worth two women. They are not the same," she told Cadena SER.

Bahrami explained that she was now waiting for a letter from the court to go back to Iran for the punishment to be carried out.

Cadenda SER said that after undergoing treatment in Barcelona, Bahrami recovered 40 percent vision in one eye but since then doctors have not been able to prevent her from going totally blind. She also suffered horrific burns to her face, scalp and body.

She says she now survives on euro400 ($500) a month in aid from the Spanish government.

The woman said Majid would be blinded by having several drops of acid put into one eye, whereas she had acid splashed all over her face and other parts of her body.

It was not immediately possible to make contact with Bahrami on Wednesday. No one at the Iranian Embassy was available for comment either.

Too many levels of crazy to address...

Hammurabi could not be reached for comment either.

Gore Pulls Slide of Disaster Trends - Dot Earth Blog - NYTimes.com

Oooops.....Gore Pulls Slide of Disaster Trends - Dot Earth Blog - NYTimes.com

THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!  THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!  THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!!

Two days after the talk, Mr. Gore was sharply criticized for using the data
to make a point about global warming by Roger A. Pielke, Jr., a
political scientist focused on disaster trends and climate policy at
the University of Colorado. Mr. Pielke noted that the Center for
Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters stressed in reports that a
host of factors unrelated to climate caused the enormous rise in
reported disasters (details below).

Dr. Pielke quoted the Belgian center: “Indeed, justifying the upward
trend in hydro-meteorological disaster occurrence and impacts
essentially through climate change would be misleading. Climate change
is probably an actor in this increase but not the major one — even if
its impact on the figures will likely become more evident in the
future.”

The Goracle has listened to a very small bit of reason and is taking away at least one
exclamation point from his doom and gloom presentation.  With any luck,
he might stop using all caps in his next Chicken Little Proclamation.

Can you imagine this clown being president during the economic crisis the country is currently having?

Fran's Italian Coffee

Three day weekend (president’s day) spent at the house preparing for Fran to host this month’s Squadron Coffee--monthly wives get-together. Lot’s of Italian-esque food prepared and general cleanup (standard sterilization process)

The "Coffee" was a big hit with the wives, and she enjoyed making all the delicious food that i couldn’t eat. (3rd week of my diet!) Among the treats she prepared; home-made meatballs for the spaghetti and home made Tiramisu.

Oddly enough, no coffee was served!

THE BIG TAX BREAK: WORKERS GET $13 MORE A WEEK! HOMERS OF THE WORLD REJOICE!

THE BIG TAX BREAK: WORKERS GET $13 MORE A WEEK!

The $500-per-worker credit for lower- and middle-income taxpayers that
Obama outlined during his presidential campaign was scaled back to $400
during bargaining by the Democratic-controlled Congress and White
House. Couples would receive $800 instead of $1,000. Over two years,
that move would pump about $25 billion less into the economy than had
been previously planned.

Officials estimated it would mean about $13 a week more in people's
paychecks when withholding tables are adjusted in late spring. Critics
say that's unlikely to do much to boost consumption.

All those angry protesters chanting "What do we want?  $13!  When do we want it?  Now!!"  you can stop...your chanting has done the trick!

I take back all those bad thoughts about the BHO!  he is a savior, he is the messiah!  thanks to the BHO, i can now go to McDonalds one time more per week with my family.  What a guy!  What else could I ask for?

I guess he really taught all those CEOs a lesson on what a salary cap really means.  And he certainly showed those ol' Democratic Congressmen he means business!

Terrorist leaders of the world...this is just the beginning.  Wait until it's your turn!

Anniversary Weekend

Well, not quite a whole weekend, but we celebrated our 6h anniversary on Thursday with a nice dinner out and then traded cards on the real day, Friday.

Thursday we went to A Chef’s Kitchen, a unique restaurant in downtown Williamsburg. Fran has been dying to go there for quite some time, but it has always been full every time she tried to get reservations.

But I successfully got reservations and surprised her with a night out, despite my new diet. I think it was worth it. The restaurant is set up like a classroom and the chef (with a very impressive record) cooks and teaches techniques to everyone. So the dinner “show” was about 2.5 hours long and we had an amazing 5+ course dinner all prepared in front of us.

Our dinner menu:

Butternut Squash Soup with Melted Fontina & Reggiano Parmigiano Semonlina-Crostini
Salad Composé of Baby Spinach, Roasted Artichokes, Herbed Cannolini & Marinated Red Onions
Skillet Baked Corn Bread
Sautéed Shrimp on Yukon Gold Potato Gremolata with Parsley Butter
Roast Rack of Pork Stuffed with Applewood-Smoked Bacon, Mushrooms & Garlic Confit with Saffron-Leek Risotto
Tia Maria Tiramisu with Sundried Cherry Coulis

Plus Champagne, 3 Glasses of Wine (matched to the individual courses) and some Hors d'œuvre before the show.

The chef was very simpatico as was his assistant, and it was great entertainment. We got a copy of the recipes as we left. The bad thing is that the dinner was outstanding and changes every few months, and he also gives “short courses” during the week days. I have a bad feeling that we’ll be back again. The dinner was expensive, but considering we had almost 3 hours of entertainment AND a first class dinner...probably cheaper than a dinner/show combo for two in any big city.

So much for the diet!

Today’s recommendation is obviously A Chef’s Kitchen

ABC News: Obama's Perks: Private Jet, Chef Tax-Free

Obama's Perks: Private Jet, Chef Tax-Free
ABC News: Obama's Perks: Private Jet, Chef Tax-Free

Funny thing, the free press.  You get statements like this:

"America's CEOs are coming under fire these days not just for their
hefty salaries but also for their use of private jets, limos with
drivers and free trips to posh resorts."

But they aren't alone in living this lavish lifestyle -- the president of United States gets all these perks and more.

And unlike some of his Cabinet appointments, he doesn't have to pay taxes on these benefits.

then this:

President
Barack Obama on Wednesday imposed $500,000 caps on senior executive pay
for the most distressed financial institutions receiving federal
bailout money, saying Americans are upset with "executives being
rewarded for failure."

I agree...we should not reward executives for failure.

So how about a new presidential salary plan.  The president doesn't get paid until the end of his term.  And then he only gets paid based on how many of his campaign objectives, no matter how outlandish, that he actually accomplishes.  Kinda like getting stock options.

GWB...let's see...you promised to keep America safe.  Check...you pass go, you get your $400K per year, have fun in Crawford.

BHO...let's see you promised to...remove lobbyists from the Gov't payroll and enforce ethics in your administration and government in general...and oh yea, change the world.  I hope you have put away some "rainy day money" b/c your take home pay for the next 4 years might be a little light.

BHO chooses his first enemy to smite

CNSNews.com - Democrats Launch Petition Against Rush Limbaugh

Democrats sent scurrying around the Capitol, demanding someone to look up the word "smite".

Since when does the Office of the President attack private citizens exercising one of the rights the same President just vowed to protect only a few weeks ago?

The president speaks and then the Democrat controlle Congress acts out?

Sounds like a not-so-subtle version of the old Democratic whine..."Vast LeftWing Conspiracy", except it's not an underground conspiracy movement. It is out in the open, in our own government.

I should have remembered that ancient adage...Don't Blog When You're Angry

A friend of mine placed the following "innocent" comment over on his blog. Innocent, in that he truly feels this way about the subject. A confessed republican (these days is there anything else but a confessed republican?), one reason he voted for BHO was that he claims “to have seen it in his eyes”. One could call such passion and belief Naivete...the same sort Naivete that has somehow infected the entire country recently.

Pundits have attempted to claim that this Naivete is actually a worldwide phenomenon, in order to bolster the stateside legitimacy of the Naivete. Boy, do I feel for the political souls of the poor bushmen of the Australian Outback and the Indians of the Amazon who haven’t seen the light! How do we save them if they can’t get to the inter-tubes or watch Chris Matthews each night?

Anyways, I guess at this point I should replace the word Naivete with the word "Optimism" or more accurately with the more (in)famous word used as the mantra to mask a dangerous mix of both Naivete and Optimism: "Change".

I don't really blame individuals for having Optimism; they've been beaten down daily with the doom and gloom for the last 8 years by so-called journalists like Matthew, Couric, and Olbermann, only recently having something tangible (the economic downturn) to cling to in order to rationalize the previous 8 years of constant doom and gloom and to better bolster their desire for Optimism.

What I do blame is the slimy politicians who have maneuvered and exploited peoples fears into the latest cause celeb, in order to bring about the political change they wanted in the first place. The danger is this time is that the fears were so well exploited and manipulated it causes otherwise intelligent and previously rational people to overlook (ignore?) the standard political maneuvering and instead latch on to and defend political opinions with the same stubbornness and intransigence previously reserved for religious debates.

History shows what happens when people differ over anything that is based on religious orthodoxies...there is rarely any compromise, just periods of peace while one camp regroups and rearms.

I shudder to think what will happen if the optimistic supporters of "Change" fail to realize they have been duped into bearing a political cause onto shoulders previously reserved for religious fanaticism. Will they ever admit it? Would they retaliate even if they do figure it out?

So...I give you my exceptionally intelligent and dear "innocent friend":

I am amazed at the overall feeling of hope being displayed in America during the week before tomorrow's inauguration. I was wondering how this week would be going if it were McCain about to take the Oath of the President of the United States. I seriously doubt it would be causing any blips on blogs, in the media, or in people's hearts. Bono? I think, no! HBO? No way! If anything, AARP probably would have hosted a party in his honor, but Rock Star status? Never! Obama is a frickin' Rock Star!! His speeches are heartfelt and seemingly unrehearsed. He doesn't need rehearsal because he believes what he is saying and he probably wrote it himself. I have heard only one better speaker...Howard Schultz, the founder of Starbucks. The master communicator, Howard is able to paint a picture with words that you can see, feel, and get behind. Obama has that same quality...speaking eloquently and truthfully with no crossed fingers behind his back.

President Obama has galvanized a nation before he has even spent one day in office! He will get the entire west coast up at 6 am to watch this magical day unfold. It feels as if the world is changing, and we are all in the front row to watch it. Better yet, we can help drive it. Will he get everything done? Nope, not even close...but his true victory has already happened...he has re-energized a nation with hope about its future. We already believe the world can change...we are ready to serve when asked.

Okay, this would be expected coming from a Millennial, but heck, I am a Boomer! And better (worse?) yet, a dyed-in-the-wool Republican Boomer! I was one of those converts as soon as Obama announced his candidacy. I was worried when he went up against the Hilary political machine, but somehow justice prevailed. Quick shift in subject...what would this inauguration be like if Hilary had won? I don't think there would be that same feeling of hope, but a whole generation of young women would feel empowered to change their world, and a bunch of us old guys would be pissed off. That polarizing effect was her downfall.

So I am going to bed early so I can get up and watch the spectacle live...no Tivo for this Boomer! Like Michelle says, I am proud again to be an American! You white people just don't get it! Ha ha!

Chow!

So now my confession...I took advantage of my friend's blog and began a short reply to what I thought was another case of Optimism that runneth over. Instead, the short reply turned into a long comment abuse session, something that should have started out on my blog instead of continuing my own reply that obviously ranneth over in the comments section of his blog:

what most people don't get is that every since JFK's brains were blown out on national TV, people have been trying to relive and return to that imaginary "Camelot" moment. boomers have been taught they were cheated of so very much by an assasin's bullet. they were cheated and nirvana on earth was just around the corner. boomers have managed to forget everything bad about that time, anything unsavory about that administration in particular, and paint the entire era in a golden light that only yearning memories can conjure up.

fast forward to today. after decades of being spoon fed tabloid stories of hollywood rich and famous, bad boy sports stars, and wannabe Gangstas-cum-rappers, the internet is capable of creating overnight cult status...in timeframes that give PR firms wet dreams. find a pretty face, prop it up with pretty (not necessarily true) PR, and let viral internet marketing do the heavy lifting.

marry this ability to create empty heroes overnight with the gullibility of those who deem themselves cheated of those Camelot years, mix it in with the economic and political difficulties of today, add a dash of hatred that only Bill Maher and Jon Stewart followers can generate, and you have created a void that only a full fledged internet Superstar can fill.

the fact that BHO is considered worthy of Rock Star Status before he has even "cut his first record" is evidence of the successful PR campaign sucked in by the throngs. He is a politician first and foremost; one who has not done anything worthy of accolades. a politician by definition disappoints b/c there is no way to satisfy all constituents. he had no successes in any of his previous political jobs; his sole success was to spend time and energy in one political rung in order to successfully move to the next political rung.

BHO's sole achievement thus far? being the first non-white to be elected president. the fact that he was raised by white grandparents didn't hurt, nor the fact that he went to harvard (mostly white elitist) university. but frankly, with a $600 million war campaign and that an old un-hip hero from a unpopular war was his major competition, even a plain old rock could have been elected. does that fact alone deserve rock star status? maybe. hopefully this will signal to the jesse jacksons and al sharptons of the world that making a living off of racial tensions is an outdated business model. hopefully it will also spell the end for affirmative action quotas everywhere. so i do applaud him for achieving that goal. was the election of a non-white inevitable? of course it was. as is the election of the first non-male president in the near future. i'm glad this particular race barrier has been breached and look forward to the consequences that event will bring to racial equality in this country.

but becoming president of the US hardly justifies embarassing comments like "BHO is a great step forward for humanity", "BHO will unite the world"....what US-centric arrogance. why limit the absurdity? why not "BHO is a bold step forward for all terrestial and non-terrestial life alike"? i think it is safe to assume that a majority of the world doesn't know who BHO is, and a much larger percentage of the world will neither benefit nor suffer from any decision BHO makes during his entire US presidency.

so just like so many self absorbed Rock Stars who think they are more important than they really are, BHO risks falling from grace b/c "Every move he makes...Every bond he breaks...Every step he takes. They'll be watching him". hopefully he doesn't think as much of himself as all the bleating sheep who get their daily doses of his "greatness" by the tabloid press we used to call the nightly news.

galvanized a nation? that might not be such lofty praise. our nation is equally galvanized by britney spears' next haircut and p diddy's next weapons related arrest. BHO has simply successfully exploited the chatterbox that is the internet and created an amazing PR image in the minds of people who have been trained that every major problem is solved by a hero in 60 minutes or less, not counting commercials.

if BHO is only 1/10th as successful as he has already been labeled, then the country is in for some good times. but honestly it is time to put away BHO t-shirts, the BHO dinner plates, the BHO cookies, the BHO coffee blends, the BHO coin sets, and all the ridiculous and embarrassing superlatives uttered by the ditzy Katie Courics and Chris Matthews' of the US non-news and just measure the man by his actions.

end soapbox

whew...ok, feel free to tell me I should be ashamed of myself for talking so much on my friend's blog and I'm just a big meanie.

Since my friend and I had a couple of spirited discussions about politics before and after the elections, I don’t think that my friend and I are in danger of devolving into a religio-political war or that we will come to blows. (besides, it is just too expensive to fly to the other side of the country just to give him the slap to the forehead he deserves!) We have our long friendship to serve as a cushion to protect us from any unintended or perceived slights. I do worry that alot of people in the rest of the country don’t have this built in cushion to turn to help balance out what will inevitably turn into alot of squabbling over “Optimism”.

I hope that the shininess of BHO’s election quickly wears off and his worshipers grow weary of the one common thing that can destroy (oddly enough) both a religion and a government: idolatry.

Interesting viewpoint on the latest "conflict"

America's Right: My Uninformed Gut Feeling on the Current Middle East Conflict
Over the past few days, the news reports surrounding the most recent
flare-up between Israel and Hamas reminds me of the news reports from
this time last year, when the 24-hour networks were alternating between
analysis of the upcoming Iowa caucus and a story out of San Francisco
about a dead man and two injured brothers, victims of a 300-pound tiger
named Tatiana which had escaped from its enclosure at that city's zoo.

Most people would agree throwing stones at tigers in a cage is a pretty cowardly act.  It is also pretty dangerous if you're not smart enough to think to protect yourself from the inevitable act of self-defense from the frustrated tiger.

But no one has ever accused terrorists of being brave or intelligent.  No one except US media, ex-presidents, and liberal elites.

Fran's birthday party and more

Fran had another birthday party, as usual.  It started out as a small and innocent (as usual) Christmas Cup of Good Cheer Party and grew to a make lots of food and buy lots of alcohol party (as usual) and have more people over (as usual) than originally intended...and turned out to be a lot of fun (as usual).

Friends from the neighborhood, a few from the squadron, and some from past assignments all showed up and we had a good time.  We made Wassail (from apple cider), mulled wine, homemade eggnog, and served Fran’s second birthday cake of the week. (there was a slight, uhh...technical, malfunction with her first cake, but no need to go into any gory details on that, right?)

We were supposed to go to Washington DC this weekend to stay Sunday night and explore DC in Christmas spirit, but the weather threatened to be snowy and icy.  We were to pick up our airstream (out for repairs) on Monday on the way back, but we decided to skip DC and pick up the trailer on Saturday instead while the weather was clear.

It turned out to be a lucky move as the weather in DC was cold and here in Yorktown the electrical power in the neighborhood failed Sunday night around dinner time.  So we moved the cooking out to the trailer and had a quiet “campout” in the driveway.  We may not have a household generator, but we have an entire escape pod if we need it.

The power came back on in the middle of dinner, but ended up failing again this morning at about 7am.  We hope they figure it out, as it turns out to be the coldest day of the year so far.  At 10am this morning, it is still only 28 degrees.  It was a bit chilly by the time we got up to make breakfast.

Even though the power was out, it was interesting to know we still had email and internet b/c of our iPhones can still get to the 3G web service.  We could monitor the weather channel, send out email updates if we needed help, and of course use the phone to contact emergency services.  I think that the iPhone is a remarkable "phone" and most applications are still fairly narrow in their usage, but the capabilities the iPhone brings (internet and email even without local power) could make it a game changer in survival/disaster scenarios.  I wish I were an iPhone programmer...I'd whip up some type of "Swiss army knife" survival suite of apps....compass, GPS coordinate marking, Emergency Bulletin Service monitoring, National Weather Service monitoring tool.

We getting together with Al and Sharon for Christmas, so I’m busy organizing the Christmas dinner contributions we’ll take over.  I think we’ve settled on:

City ham recipe (courtesy Good Eats) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/city-ham-recipe/index.html
(recipe starts at the 2:50 mark on this youtube clip--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLVBmMxl0X8&feature=related)
Maple Orange Glaze (courtesy Cooks Illustrated)
Best Sweet Potato Pie (courtesy Cooks Illustrated) which was a big winner at Thanksgiving...
Egg Nog Ice cream (courtesy Good Eats) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/eggnog-ice-cream-recipe2/index.html
on a nearby web page you can find the recipe I used to make the regular egg nog served at the Christmas Good Cheer Party that garnered rave reviews. I suspect the ice cream version will go over well also.

Here’s the leaf cam snap for the day, very cold and clear.  All leaves now gone!

Waiting for Hollywood, NYT, ACLU, BDS, Moveon outrage

My Way News - China blocks access to New York Times Web site

China has blocked access to the New York Times Web site, the newspaper said Saturday, days after the central government defended its right to censor online content it deems illegal.

Computer users who logged on in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou received a message that the site was not available when they tried to connect on Friday morning, the paper said. Some users were cut of as early as Thursday evening, it said.

The Web site remained inaccessible from Beijing Saturday.

No real loss for the Chinese people with good literary taste, but I am waiting for the standard litany of outrage at President Bush...because he is the world's biggest threat you know. Nevermind actual losses of civil rights and loss of media control and true oppression from the Chinese gov't or truly oppressive regimes in Africa or the Middle East.

No, the ire of "liberals" is reserved for our own government who is only accused of maybe/possibly/reportedly transgressing freedoms, based entirely on unsubstantiated rumors from unnamed sources with no real proof. Not to mention there have been no screaming headlines of anyone actually being "disappeared" off the streets due to "domestic spying" or mass arrests of "subversives". But rumor and hysteria alone are enough for people to rally in the streets of west/east coast elitist-towns and yammer incessantly about impeachment. If you don't demand impeachment, you're not very trendy, not part of the in-crowd.

Meanwhile in the real word, governments are really torturing, really attacking, really starving, and really stealing the rights of their people. In our country if someone who makes $30K per year can't afford a new Mercedes and a $500K home, it's Bush's fault and he is the country's worst president.

Just ask Robert Redford, Barbara Streisand, Rosie O'donnell and other political geniuses. Just don't ask them about what they think of the Chinese government. Real oppression is just too messy to deal with and doesn't sound as cool in the headlines--especially in China.

Higher taxes on wine, beer and flavored malt beverages. He would also impose an 18% tax on non-nutritional drinks like soda.

Sounds like change we can all believe in...coming to a tax office near you soon!

Nanny senator for a nanny state

'Nanny' TV star Drescher seeks Senate seat.

So the Nanny is competing with Princess Kennedy over Hildawg's warm spot in the senate?  Seems ok with me, she's probably more qualified of the three to hold office.  With the exception of her recent Hollywood years, she's the only real person in the bunch.

I'll take stunningly accurate quotes for the ages for $500, Alex

who said:

"For the great majority of mankind are satisfied with appearances, as
though they were realities, and are often more influenced by the things
that seem than by those that are".

someone who had trouble sleeping the night of 4 Nov 2008? no....but i think this speaker would have been very proud of the new chief of the office of president-elect.

Christmas must be close...

I know because we completed one of our annual holiday events....we fussed at each other about how/when/where to take the yearly photo. :)

But the results were very nice, don't you think?

The only problem with the photo...no presents yet!

Poor old Santa; he gets further and further behind every year.

War on Leaves

Recent high winds and rain have stripped all the remaining leaves and
dumped them on our patio.

I think we need to appoint a Czar of Dead Leaves to handle this urgent
situation, before the US economy collapses from the flood of now

we bought our xmas presents early. we are at the end of our verizon phone contract and have been planning on getting iphones. so we went ahead and bought them saturday. so now life is just appley-perfect, eh? some things not quite as good as on my palm. some things really really cool.

my parents made it home ok after being gone for over two weeks. it was a good visit but i know they’re tired. hopefully they will recover in time to come back to visit next summer.

Ungrateful Indians...don't they know a Christian Messiah when they see one?

MSNBC Anchor Frets: Why Hasn't Obama's Election Ended Terrorism? --12/2/2008-- Media Research Center

File this one under "Deluded Expectations." During MSNBC's coverage of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India, on Thursday, daytime anchor Alex Witt seemed frustrated that the election of Barack Obama 23 days earlier -- and the accompanying "global outpouring of affection, respect, hope" -- had not caused an end to terrorist violence.

Talking with correspondent John Yang, who was covering the Obama side of the story, Witt conceded that while "you certainly can't expect things to change on a dime overnight....There had been such a global outpouring of affection, respect, hope, with the new administration coming in, that precisely these kinds of attacks, it was thought -- at least hoped -- would be dampered down. But in this case it looks like Barack Obama is getting a preview of things to come."

I think it is very un-sheep-like not to recognize the BO as a universal messiah when US media has been patiently telling everyone who reads english that He has been elected on behalf of the entire world.  What is up with those crazy non-BO fanatics?  It is not respectful to kill yourself when the BO is clearly here to save the world.

If they aren't careful, the democrats will issue a Fatwah on their non-believing asses...and then Hollywood actors with explosives strapped under their Dior and Bill Blass will descend upon them.  When Micheal Moore shows up in Islamabad or Mecca looking unusually lumpy, don't say I didn't warn you.

"Change". It just doesn't buy as much as it used to.

BBC NEWS | Americas | US Elections 2008 | Is Obama recreating the Clinton era?

Is Obama recreating the Clinton era?

FTA:

All in all, 31 of the 47 transition or staff posts that Mr Obama has filled so far have gone to people with ties to the Clinton administration, Politico has reported.

Eleven of the 12 members of his Transition Advisory Board are Clinton veterans.

I guess it is what anyone does when they are surprised to find themselves dealing with something they can't handle...you surround yourself with people who claim to have the experience you lack.

So much for all those campaign slogans promising change.  Why bring back the old Clinton advisory team?  To paraphrase a recent democrat slogan...eight is enough...more than enough of the failed Clinton policies.

Why is watching hippies cry so much fun?

In Awed and Hushed Tone, Diane Sawyer Reads Aloud From Obama

In an odd, non-sequitur of a segment, co-host Diane Sawyer kicked off the 8:30 hour of Friday's "Good Morning America" by reading aloud from an essay that President-elect Barack Obama wrote about Abraham Lincoln for a 2005 issue of Time magazine. Stopping the show cold for a minute and 22 seconds, she solemnly began, "...There was something that made us all stop and think. And you know, it's 60 days now. 60 days until the inauguration of a new president."

Then, Sawyer gravely announced that Obama had, in fact, written an essay: "And we saw that President-elect Obama has a favorite photograph, which he looks at. And here are the words that he wrote in Time magazine. An essay." To music that seemed reminiscent of the Ken Burns "Civil War" documentary, with images of Lincoln appearing on screen, the GMA host recited the words of the President-elect's Time article.

Earth to Diane, Earth to Diane...come in Diane. The BO has already been elected. You can stop campaigning now. Please leave the documentaries to professionals.

change | ch ānj|

noun
the act or instance of making or becoming different : the change from being a nobody in Illinois to becoming an somebody in the White House for no apparent reason | see "change the change we are changing"
• the substitution of one thing for another : deceitful democrat for placating marxist.

Etymology:
Greek, from αυτό που είναι εσείς που καπνίζετε and αυτό είναι αυτό που καλείτε αλλαγή "what the hell are you smoking?" and "this is what you call change?"

What the....?

This is from a widget I started using this summer to find the cheapest gas prices in the neighborhood. It's called "Gas"...catchy name, eh?

Anyways...back then I seem to remember gas being over $4.00 per gallon. This snapshot captures the latest prices. From what I remember, OPEC refused to up their output this summer when all the western countries started begging them to do something about the $140 per barrel oil prices. So if they did not increase supply, and overall demand really didn't drop all that much, why has the price of oil/gas dropped like a rock?

I hope someone somewhere made a ton of money of off this. I would prefer to think that somebody manipulated the market and made a couple of million bazillion dollars than to think that the price of oil is like a spin of the roulette wheel.

Tobacco Harvest

Here's the plantation owner (simulated) enjoying a pipe of last year's harvest (simulated) in an authentic colonial pub pipe (reproduction) and a cup of tea (don't tell those crazy Boston Tea Party "indians").

IMG_1046

This is the best I could come up with for aging/drying. It was inspired by a drying barn we saw at colonial village reproduction at the Yorktown Victory center nearby. I think I should go back and take a closer look next year. I think the colonists kept a small smoky fire going on the floor of the barn to help dry. Fran really didn't approve of that part of the plan when I suggested it! :)

Forgotten History: Why MLK was a Republican

National Black Republican Association - DYK-Why MLK was a Republican
It should come as no surprise that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. In that era, almost all black Americans were Republicans. Why? From its founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party until today, the Republican Party has championed freedom and civil rights for blacks. And as one pundit so succinctly stated, the Democrat Party is as it always has been, the party of the four S's: Slavery, Secession, Segregation and now Socialism.

It was the Democrats who fought to keep blacks in slavery and passed the discriminatory Black Codes and Jim Crow laws. The Democrats started the Ku Klux Klan to lynch and terrorize blacks. The Democrats fought to prevent the passage of every civil rights law beginning with the civil rights laws of the 1860's, and continuing with the civil rights laws of the 1950's and 1960's.

I'm sure if you ask any member of Generation E what political party MLK Jr belonged to, you'd get a very surprised look after you corrected the Gen E'er that MLK was not a member of the BO's party.  But that surprised look would pale in comparison if you listed the democrat party's long list of "contributions" towards civil rights (summary from the article):

  • democrat George Wallace led pro-segregation at University of Alabama, and proclaimed "I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever"
  • democrat JFK voted against the 1957 Civil rights Act
  • democrat JFK was opposed to the 1963 March on Washington by Dr. King
  • democrat JFK and brother RFK had Dr. King wiretapped and investigated by the FBI on suspicion of being a Communist  (how's that look compared to today's Patriot Act?)
  • democrat senator Robert Byrd was a former member of the KKK and considered MLK a troublemaker, and later led a failed filibuster against passage of the civil rights act of 1964

  • even further back in time, it was the republicans that amended the constitution post civil war to grant blacks freedoms and passed the first civil rights...back in the 1860s!
  • republicans also helped start the NAACP.

Nope, your typical Gen E'r would be completely surprised about the original origins of US civil rights.  But that is just another day in the re-write of US History.

Economics even Joe Six pack can understand

I'm sure that all the big brains of the democratic strategists would poo-poo this working man's explanation of taxes as being preposterous. But substitute wine-spritzer and day-spa for beer and bar respectively, and I'm sure you'd get their attention:

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten
comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it
would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with
the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are
all such good customers,' he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your
daily beer by $20.' Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the
first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.

But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they
divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'

They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted
that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would
each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested
that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same
amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). The
sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings). The seventh now pay $5
instead of $7 (28% savings). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25%
savings). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings). The tenth
now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued
to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to
compare their savings.

'I only got a dollar out of the $20, 'declared the sixth man. He pointed
to the tenth man,' but he got $10!'

'Yeah, that's right,' ex claimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar,
too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I got' 'That's true!!'
shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only
two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'

'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get
anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks so the nine sat
down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill,
they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money
between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is
how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the
most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for
being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they
might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat
friendlier.

Now this is change even I can believe in.

CHICAGO—In a devastating blow to millions of unsuspecting Americans, newly elected president and international con man Barack Obama fled the country Wednesday with nearly $85 million in campaign funds.

According to FBI investigators, Obama's sudden disappearance was discovered at 6:15 p.m. when the former Illinois senator failed to arrive at a gala event in Lincoln Square, prompting several aides to rush back to his campaign headquarters. At 6:23 p.m., flight logs at O'Hare International Airport confirmed that two passengers, a male carrying two silver briefcases and dressed in a perfectly tailored Brioni tuxedo, and an African-American female wearing a fur coat and speaking in a thick Russian accent, were seen boarding a private plane.

Had a good weekend off to ourselves. No committments, parties, etc. So we took the trailer back to the base on Saturday and went shopping. We found a new baby/rocking/mother-in-law-sleeping chair for the baby room. (parents are visiting finally, yea!) Then we went looking at new/used cars just to see the market selection. I still don’t know if we can afford a change of cars, but fran seems insistent.

also went out to dinner...olive garden. yuck. but at least it was a night off from the kitchen.

sunday made some pancakes and then we went to williamsburg to see the eastern end of the historic area where “Revolutionary City” is shown in a usually roped off area that you have to pay to enter. it’s free due to upcoming veterans day, so we cheapskate veterans took advantage of the awesome weather and the free admission to wander around. some really good performances by “George Washington”, “Benedict Arnold“ and others. very nice day.

i’ll post some photos later...in the meantime here is one from the office window of the changing leaves.

What the...? Part 1

The end must be nearer than i thought.

Nov 8, 2008

i've got some pretty smart friends out there who have actually replied to my BO skepticism and queries with "but he promises so much change, i can just see it in his eyes...."

too bad the born-obamas didn't see this clip or this movie before they blindly followed the Rising of the BO.

maybe a few of the more intelligent ones would have snapped out of their stupor to realize the quality of the BS they've been fed for the last 2 years. at least Hilary would have been predictably inefficient and citizens of the US could criticize her when she made mistakes without fear of being branded racists or worse.

the cult of BO will not allow any honest criticisms to be raised and will root out nay-sayers. the first "press conference" has already shown a glimpse of that. the first press conference has already shown the BO backing down from his promises now that he has no use for them or the 'bots that he promised them too.

Yep, this is the (arrogant) change we can all believe in.  Open yap, insert foot, then change to other foot...

Just like the 57 states comment, the BO has somehow mixed up his facts...it was a president's wife some 150 years ago who reportedly held seances and it was the last democratic president's wife 10 years ago or so who admittedly spoke to the dead in the white house.

so i guess it's ok to start attacking old white women from the presidential podium now?  say BO, how about that old white woman who recently died in hawaii...have you any seances with her in the last few days?  ooops...my bad, i guess only the BO has stature to make jokes like that.

yep...this is going to be an entertaining 4 years.

So it is now the job of a journalist to "make the presidency work". Is it possible for journalistic integrity to go any lower?

I guess it is worth noting the other two journalists on the show seemed so stunned they weren't able to mount a very good rebuttal, even though they appeared to strongly disagree.

Excuse Factory...now closed!

I saw this comment on a forum somewhere. Sorry I can’t give the original poster due credity.

Law of unintended consequences. The excuse factory is now CLOSED. No
more of this nonsense that the U.S is a "racist" country, where a brutha
can't make it. The sharptons, jacksons, and their minions are scrambling
looking for a new talking point to keep their cash stream alive by
selling the false notion of perpetual victimhood. The wealthiest, most
prosperous, most educated "people of color" in the world are in the U.S.
Are they all coming here to be oppressed? Nothing is off limits to
anyone. Hussein raised $1 billion and became leader of the free world
with support of millions of (gullible) white folk. About a year from
now, when the euphoria wears off and the reality of this failed social
experiment sets in, the kool-aid drinkers will realize that they are no
better off under a (half) black president and that the "secret" to
personal success lies within oneself, not the government.

Some overly inflammatory verbiage, but point is worth considering about racism. Especially re: affirmative action, can affirmative action be (legally) put to bed now?

Maybe that explains why Sharpton and Jackson weren’t more prevalent in the campaigning. Might explain all those crocodile tears in the multiple closeups of Jackson on election night.
Very windy and rainy day yesterday. At about 8 oclock we heard a big “boom” outside and the lights went off. I yelled down at Fran b/c she was experimenting in the kitchen with a new recipe, but it wasn’t her. ☺ Guess another tree fell in the neighborhood (one fell about 2 weeks ago) and we were without power just as she was going to start cooking her experiment.

So, we “evacuated” to the Airstream which is still parked on the side of the house because I hadn’t dragged it back to the storage yard after last weekend’s camping trip. I turned on the gas, fired up the stove and we “camped out” for a couple of hours. It was really kinda nice. We didn’t have the TV or computer going, only a radio playing and were “forced” to just talk and entertain ourselves. Of course we weren’t forced, but I mean we weren’t just talking to each other in between bites of food during dinner or in-between commercials while watching the news. We had a really fun time, just the two of us.

Ooops... Santorini was at our feet as normal and definitely didn’t let us forget he was there too.

Maybe I won’t take the trailer back for a while and we’ll just use it for a “retreat” once or twice a week.

The creation of a new generation, Generation "E"...Generation Entitlement. Gen E has now officially come of age. The now think they have an advocate in the White House who is committed to their cause: Entitlements to free things from the government.

Video of woman saying the Obama will help pay for her gas and her mortgage:

So we stayed up late last night watching a horrible scene playout on TV....a president elected on the backs of overt racism. I can’t find the link (yet) but i understand that the BO got 90% or so of the black vote. I thought that the BO was going to prove the racism in the US was over.

This European-American wonders what MLK Jr would think of the racism that seems to taint the election of the first black president.

DAILY NATION - Bull awaits Obama win in Kogelo village

Just goes to show you what a Global World we live in.  New polls show that Americans will be eating nothing short of a metric ton of bull per man, woman, and child if BO is elected.  What the news report fails to add is that (if elected) BO will hand-select who among the faithful elite get the prime cut, while all us "Joe the plumber types" will be encouraged to enjoy four years of pure BS.

By the weekend, his running mate will tell us it is patriotic to eat more than our fair share of BS.  And the recently converted born-obamas will start happily chewing...

returned safe and sound from another trip to Shenandoah camping. We stayed at Big Meadows again this year. Couldn’t have had better weather if we had planned it...and we didn’t. We were supposed to go camping last weekend with the squadron and it was cancelled due to weekend “special” flying just as I was about to hook up the trailer. (note--then within 24 hours the “special” flying was also cancelled). so since we had the trailer at the house, we decided to go on our own this weekend and see where we ended up. definitely autumn...it might get to freezing tonight!

with the cold weather coming, i don’t know what to do with my tobacco plants. they haven’t bloomed yet, so it is not recommended to “harvest” the leaves. the plants aren’t nearly as big as some of the others i’ve seen in online growers’ forums. but i don’t think the plants are going to like the cold weather yet to come. guess i’ve got nothing to lose by cutting the leaves and hanging them to dry. more experimenting.

oh, the messiah, the chosen one, the BO had his big 30 minute commercial last night. i thought my time was better used by playing a new video game and waiting for the punditry to clear the chaff later.

i did read some online comments...evidently this tv commerical had his followers in tears due to the material and lighting and music and transitions. i find it odd that a salesman has to spend so much money to sell a product so late in the buying season. i wonder what it would be like to be such an ardent follower of anything. is that how zealots of (insert cause of the day/week/month/decade here) felt? what’s worse were the threats made, some not so veiled, about the rioting/civil disobedience/anger that everyone should “express” if the BO is not elected.

i don’t know how the words of any POLITICIAN could possible move someone to tears. think about it...a politician’s words...and audiences crying. $400 million dollars and crying converts.

now think about this--$400 million dollars from unknown sources, civil disobedience, and rioting. i don’t think this is what the founding fathers had in mind when they came up with the idea of “free” elections.

Edgelings.com » Editing Their Way to Oblivion: Journalism Sacrificed For Power and Pensions

Meanwhile, I watched with disbelief as the nation’s leading newspapers, many of whom I’d written for in the past, slowly let opinion pieces creep into the news section, and from there onto the front page. Personal opinions and comments that, had they appeared in my stories in 1979, would have gotten my butt kicked by the nearest copy editor, were now standard operating procedure at the New York Times, the Washington Post, and soon after in almost every small town paper in the U.S.

But what really shattered my faith - and I know the day and place where it happened - was the War in Lebanon three summers ago. The hotel I was staying at in Windhoek, Namibia only carried CNN, a network I’d already learned to approach with skepticism. But this was CNN International, which is even worse. I sat there, first with my jaw hanging down, then actually shouting at the TV, as one field reporter after another reported the carnage of the Israeli attacks on Beirut, with almost no corresponding coverage of the Hezbollah missiles raining down on northern Israel. The reporting was so utterly and shamelessly biased that I sat there for hours watching, assuming that eventually CNNi would get around to telling the rest of the story . . .but it never happened.

But nothing, nothing I’ve seen has matched the media bias on display in the current Presidential campaign. Republicans are justifiably foaming at the mouth over the sheer one-sidedness of the press coverage of the two candidates and their running mates. But in the last few days, even Democrats, who have been gloating over the pass - no, make that shameless support - they’ve gotten from the press, are starting to get uncomfortable as they realize that no one wins in the long run when we don’t have a free and fair press. I was one of the first people in the traditional media to call for the firing of Dan Rather - not because of his phony story, but because he refused to admit his mistake - but, bless him, even Gunga Dan thinks the media is one-sided in this election.

BAM STAFFERS PULL THEIR BOGUS OHIO BALLOTS - New York Post

Thirteen campaign workers for Barack Obama yesterday yanked their voter registrations and ballots in Ohio after being warned by a prosecutor that temporary residents can't vote in the battleground state.

A dozen staffers - including Obama Ohio spokeswoman Olivia Alair and James Cadogan, who recently joined Team Obama - signed a form letter asking the Franklin County elections board to pull their names from the rolls.

The letter - a copy of which was obtained by palestra.net, a Fox News affiliate - came a day after prosecutor Ron O'Brien publicly urged out-of-state campaign workers for both Obama and John McCain to "examine your conscience" before the elections board beings begins opening absentee ballots today.

Earlier in the week, O'Brien spoke with lawyers for both camps and urged them to make sure their staffs met permanent-residency rules, or face possible felony charges.

Also pulling his ballot yesterday was Hofstra University grad Jake Smith, an Obama volunteer who had voted in Knox County, Ohio.

On Thursday, O'Brien cut a deal with 13 out-of-staters, including four from New York, who tossed out their already-cast ballots and admitted they didn't meet residency requirements.
BAM STAFFERS PULL THEIR BOGUS OHIO BALLOTS - New York Post

I'm confused...what deal is there to make?  they knowingly committed a crime, just like walking into a store and taking money, and they get to say "we're sorry"?  where's the outrage from the typically outraged democrats always screaming "they stole the elections"?  maybe they're too busy filling out false ballots to watch the news?

Secret, Foreign Money Floods Into Obama Campaign

Another fine endorsement for the One: Newsmax.com – Secret, Foreign Money Floods Into Obama Campaign

Unlike the McCain campaign, which has made its complete donor
database available online, the Obama campaign has not identified donors
for nearly half the amount he has raised, according to the Center for
Responsive Politics (CRP).

Federal law does not require the campaigns to identify donors
who give less than $200 during the election cycle. However, it does
require that campaigns calculate running totals for each donor and
report them once they go beyond the $200 mark.

Surprisingly, the great majority of Obama donors never break the $200 threshold.

(snip)

“We and seven other watchdog groups asked both campaigns for more
information on small donors,” he said. “The Obama campaign never
responded,” whereas the McCain campaign “makes all its donor
information, including the small donors, available online.”

(snip)

A Newsmax analysis of the 1.4 million individual contributions in
the latest master file for the Obama campaign discovered 1,000 separate
entries for Mr. Good Will, most of them for $25.

In total, Mr. Good Will gave $17,375.

(snip)

In June, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi gave a public speech praising Obama, claiming foreign nationals were donating to his campaign.

(snip)

A pair of Palestinian brothers named Hosam and Monir Edwan contributed
more than $31,300 to the Obama campaign in October and November 2007,
FEC records show.

At this rate, obvious Hollywood and other media elite might be relegated to the back of the line when "donations" are repaid by an Obama administration.  That's after Gadhafi, random Palestinians, and the hosts of "mysterious" $200 patrons get their special favors first.
